Guardian is a widely popular and successful Bl Chinese drama based on the popular novel of the same name by author Priest. Upon it's release, the drama received back lash from the Chinese government due to it's Homosexual undertones. Though, the series was depicted to the public as a bromance, there were still hints of romantic gestures between the two main leads leading the Chinese government to cut out some scenes. This created an uproar amongst viewers but it still didn't stop the series from achieving high ratings till the finale. The series stars Zhu Zhilong and Bai Yu as the leading characters Shen Wei and Zhao Zilong resepectively.

About the series

Unlike the novel which was based on magic, the series took a different turn making use of scientific gadgets. Guardian is set in a place almost like earth. It's a planet called Haixing. In the beginning, Humans and aliens known as Youshou and Daixing lived together in peace and harmony but it didn't last. After a meteorite falls from the sky and damages the resources of the Daixings, they declared a war against the humans. Joining forces with the Yaoshus, under the command of a warrior known as Kunlun who was also a friend to the black robed envoy , they won the war using four tools created out of the meteorite. Unfortunately, Kunlun disappeared after the war while the black robed envoy was placed to become the mediator for peace between the factions.

Thousand of years later in the present day, tensions began once again between the Daixings and the humans. Zhao Yunlan chief of the special investigation department SID, has a fateful encounter with Shen Wei,a professor at the local university while investigating a case. For some unexplained reasons, they are drawn to each other because Zhao Yunlan is unaware that he's the reincarnation of Kunlun and Shen Wei is actually his best friend, the black robed envoy who had been searching for him for thousand of years. With time, the two developed an unbreakable bond.

My Thoughts

The drama was very different from the novel and it's understandable why. Due to China's censorship against homosexual films. However, I would have loved it better if it were more like the novel. However, the most beautiful parts of the series was the chemistry between the main leads. It was hot. Mind blowing actually. For me, it was the saving grace of the series especially towards the ending parts were it started to drag a bit.

Also, Zhu Zhilong played two characters the protagonist Shen wei and the antagonist Shangong. My! He was breathtaking as Shangong. I almost preferred that look for him.

All in all, Guardian is a series worth watching especially if you are looking for great chemistry between the male leads.
